Toyota Motor Corp. came in the top of the nation’s declared corporate income ranking for 2004. Combined number of automobiles sold at home and abroad topped 1.9% over the previous year to 3,625,000 units. Aggregate sales showed a 2.6% gain year on year to 8,963,700 million yen, while ordinary income marked a 2.6% yearly increase to 915,700 million yen. Total net income fell below a year earlier, when extraordinary profit from partially returned employees’ pension fund was registered. The amount of income declared dropped 19.8% compared with a year before to 793,298.79 million yen, but that was enough to put the company in the top of the income earner’s list for the fifth consecutive year.

Came in the second was NTT DoCoMo, Inc. (NTT DoCoMo). The company earned stable revenue from cell-phone business, with the number of its “i-Mode” service subscribers topped over 40,000,000 across the nation. Operating income was up 6.3% from a year earlier to 2,633,100 million yen, whereas ordinary income dropped 15.7% year on year to 533,500 million yen. Declared income of 437,754 million yen was 672.2% greater than the previous year, when it registered a valuation loss for the overseas affiliate. Its ranking jumped to the second from the previous 53rd.

Nippon Life Insurance Company positioned in the third. While insurance revenue dropped 5.1% year on year to 5,142,800 million yen, earnings condition improved remarkably thanks to the stock price recovery.Ordinary income posted a 214.2% gain compared with a year earlier to 366,100 million yen. With a declared income exceeded 450.7% from the previous year to 402,876.38 million yen, its ranking improved significantly to the third from the 42nd in the year earlier, joining the top three positions for the first time in three years.

Canon Inc. came in the fourth. It posted steady sales thanks to the expansion of the digital camera market and the demand increase for multifunctional printers and laser color printers. The company’s declared income for the year topped 24.2% over a year earlier to 361,553.67 million yen, which put it in the top ten listings for four years in a row, with a ranking moved up to the fourth from the fifth.

Honda Motor Co., Ltd. was the one ranked in the fifth.Though its annual sales were 0.1% below the previous year at 3,322,700 million yen, ordinary income marked a record high of 311,200 million yen(up 28.3% from the previous year)thanks to the reduction in the selling and administrative expenses and other costs. It posted a 6.4% yearly gain in the declared income at 336,675 million yen.Although its ranking slipped to the fifth from the third, it remained to be one of the top-five income earners for three consecutive years.

Takeda Pharmaceutical Co., Ltd., which ranked in the top ten for the fourth consecutive year, came in the sixth. Its annual sales increased 0.5% from a year before to 764,000 million yen owing to the demand expansion for ethical drugs.Improved gross profit ratio and reduced selling and administrative costs lifted its ordinary income by 15.4% year on year to 311,600 million yen.Its declared income increased 25.9% to 317,223 million yen, and the ranking rose by one place to the sixth.

Ranked in the seventh was The Kansai Electric Power Company, Inc.A drop in the power demand due to the unusual weather conditions (cold summer, warm winter) pushed down its revenue below the year earlier.Despite such situations, earnings expanded as a result of cutting back on interest bearing liabilities and interest burden. The taxable earnings marked a 38.4% yearly gain to 315,108 million yen, and the ranking moved up to the seventh from the ninth in the previous year. The company was ranked in the top ten for the third consecutive year.

In the meantime, The Tokyo Electric Power Company, Inc. that had been placed in the top ten listings for six straight years since 1998 recorded a declared income of 263,617 million yen, down 24.3% below the previous year. This was attributed to the registration of extraordinary loss for the valuation loss of fixed assets. And the ranking slipped to the 12nd from the previous year’s second.

The National Mutual Insurance Federation of Agricultural Cooperatives (JA-Kyosai) came in the eighth.Despite the accumulation of reserves to prepare for the risks of large natural disasters and asset management, its declared income dropped 9.8% below the previous year to 281,001 million yen mainly because of the decline in the amount of taxable depreciation for marketable securities. Its ranking dropped fourth place to the eighth.

Nissan Motor Co., Ltd. took the ninth place with a declared income of 279,031 million yen.Total number of automobile sold marked a 3.0% growth over the prior year to 1,563,000 units. The company declared its income for the first time after twelve years, and made itself in the top ten rankings for the first time after 21 years (ninth place in 1983).
